The Michigan Chronicle’s Pancakes & Politics: Overdrive series recently turned its focus to one of Michigan’s most pressing challenges — education.
Moderated by Michigan Chronicle Executive Editor Jeremy Allen, the discussion featured Angelique Power, President & CEO of The Skillman Foundation; Ronald E. Hall, President & CEO of Bridgewater Interiors; and Dr. Jennifer Green, Superintendent of Southfield Public Schools.
Together, they explored Michigan’s K–12 education system and how collaboration across sectors can improve outcomes for students, families, and communities.
Despite new investments, Michigan ranks 44th nationally in overall education outcomes. Hall emphasized that inconsistent policymaking remains a major obstacle to progress.
“One of the big issues here in Michigan is that we don’t stick to policy,” said Hall. “Launch Michigan is helping to change that by uniting business, philanthropy, and education leaders to create sustainable solutions.”
Launch Michigan, a coalition of business leaders, philanthropists, and educators, aims to advance policies that address the state’s systemic challenges.
Power highlighted the need for more equitable funding models, while Dr. Green reinforced the importance of shared responsibility — from educators to businesses — to ensure every student has the support to thrive.
The discussion underscored a key takeaway: transforming Michigan’s education system requires collaboration across classrooms, boardrooms, and communities.
